Acura DPi Completes it’s First U.S. Test

The Acura ARX-05 which is Acura’s new DPI completed two days of successful testing this week at Road Atlanta,  Team Penske began an intensive development program for the new prototype in advance of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.Juan Pablo Montoya, was the driver testing the car. The outing was the first for the new prototype following an initial shakedown run last month at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, and follows its official unveiling at Monterey Car Week.

“Overall, it was a good test,” said Matthew Niles, senior engineer and project leader for Honda Performance Development.“We were close to the area of total solar eclipse [on Monday], so we had to stop running for a bit as the sun was dimmed. We went on to complete all of our run plan, and feel we have a good base to build on going forward.”

This week’s initial run was the first of a series of tests, to be conducted at a variety of circuits, planned by Team Penske and Honda Performance Development.

The competition debut of the Team Penske Acura prototypes will take place at the season-opening Rolex 24 in January.

In addition to Montoya, reigning IMSA prototype champion Dane Cameron will also be part of the 2018 lineup, with remaining drivers to be announced.

Acura Unveils New DPI car the ARX-05a

Acura has taken the wraps off it’s new DPI contender named the ARX-05. Based off the very successful Oreca 07 LMP2 Prototype. The Oreca chassis prototype features Acura-specific bodywork, created by a design team headed up by Acura Global Creative Director Dave Marek. The ARX-05 will debut in 2018 at the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona with Team Penske will run 2 Acura DPi’s in the prototype class- with Juan Pablo Montoya and Dane Cameron being confirmed for the full season. The unveiling of this car came Friday at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, as part of Monterey Car Week.

This is the first time Acura returns to top-level prototype racing since 2009 with the ARX-02a. This car winning the American Lemans Series LMP1 championship. U.S.-based testing is expected to begin in the coming week, the car will be on display at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion on Saturday, and on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday.

“We created a variety of initial sketches, then pared those down a handful of potential designs,” Marek said. “Next came aero and wind tunnel model testing, and time for the engineers to have their say.

“The design continued to be refined throughout the testing and evaluation process, until we came up with a final treatment that met our performance goals while maintaining Acura styling cues. It’s been an exciting process.”

“Right from the start, Acura has raced, and done so successfully,” said HPD and Acura President Art St. Cyr. “We’ve won with the Acura Integra Type R, the RSX, the first-generation NSX and with the Le Mans prototypes. Most recently, we’ve won with the new Acura NSX GT3.

“The ARX-05 is our fifth-generation prototype, and we expect great things from our partnership with Team Penske.”
